Shoes??

About a year and a half ago, I stumbled across a blog called "Project Rungay."  Authored by two Philadelphians, it's all about fashion, celebrity styles and things related and it's funny as anything.  I love their take on fashion - they are decidedly opinionated.  In the past week, they have been highlighting the shoe accessories from the new Bravo show "The Fashion Show" the replacement for Project Runway which has moved to Lifetime.

I've chosen my favorites from the past week.  What do you think?

What do you get when you cross a dress boot with Uggs - Fuggs?

Cheerleader pom-pom stilettos.  I'd love to see some cheer routines done in these shoes.

What trees would wear if they wore shoes.  There's a fairy in the woods missing some boots.

And finally, these.  Which for the life of me I cannot fathom how anyone in their right mind would wear something as bizarre as these.  They're like street walker shoes from Star Trek.

Nine Days Later

Nine days ago, the raised bed of beans looked like this:

Today, it looks like this:

Nine days ago, the tomato plants, the lone pepper plants were tiny.  The cucumber seeds were hiding under the dirt:

And today, the tomatoes are growing nicely:

Cucumber seeds have germinated and are through the dirt:

The pea plants are full of blossoms:

And a few peas have grown:

Maxie samples the first pea pods of the season.

One taste and she is begging for more.  Sorry my little girl, there aren't any more ready to pick.  Maybe tomorrow.

Happy growing.

This and that Thursday (or how I forgot a title after posting to another blog)

Mindless musings from the mindless:

My husband wonders why the island in the kitchen is always a mess.  Do you think it's because he is responsible for 50% of the stuff on it?

My son is cleaning out his room and re-packing things for school next semester.  Last year he started the same project when he got home for the summer and kind of finished the day he packed to go back to school.  Any one else have this problem?

Why doesn't Jon Gosselin just divorce his controlling wife who treats him like a child?  The latest story is that she gave him an allowance of $5 a day when he was working and chewed him out if he needed more.

And what's up with Kate's hair?  Look in the mirror - it's not attractive.

Does anyone else like "The Unusuals" on ABC - love Amber Tamblyn.
Went to a funeral yesterday for the man who lives next door to my parents.  He was 2 months shy of 95.  Rest in Peace Mr. R.
What's on your mind?

Hog Photos

Recently I was involved in a "groundhog relocation" effort.  While cleaning out the camera, I found some photos that my husband took of the hogs.

Apparently a burning bush is a tasty snack.  Isn't this little one too cute for words?  Until I look at the damage that it has done to the shrub.

Mama groundhog as taken through the screening on the porch.  Notice the missing fur from her back.  She needs some Rogaine.  Or the Hair Club.
Here are the three young 'ens that were born in the maternity ward under our porch.

Hope you enjoyed this glimpse into our groundhog adventure.  I'm hoping it is over.  Now if I can only catch the rabbits and relocate them, I'll be able to enjoy the landscaping.

Flowers in The Attic the garden

Once I located the camera, I thought I'd take enough picture for a few posts.  Here are some flowers from the back yard.

Here's a spring view of the shed where we took many pictures of Cardinals in the winter.  They still come to feed at least three times a day.  Behind the fence is a bird bath with a solar fountain to keep the water running.  I love the sound of the water.  Growing on the fence are pink honeysuckle and pink clematis.  In front are two shades of spider wort.  To the right of the fence are Montauk daisies and butterfly weed.

A close-up of the clematis.  The early flowers are large, while later blooms are about half the size of these.

Peony bush just to the right of the portal of the damned.  I love peonies and every year when they bloom I resolve to stake the plant so the blooms don't fall over and every year I forget.  Senior moment I suspect.

Wigelia against the fence by the walkway to the front of the house.  I love their color.

Shrub roses line the back of our morning room.  When the wind blows, the scent of the flowers is just incredible.  The pot in front contains dying hyacinth that my husband had in his office.  Once it dies back, I take the bulbs out of the pot and plant in the fall.

Hope you enjoyed some of the floral

Post groundhog photos

Here are a few photos from my groundhog adventure:

Here's the hole chewed in the lattice under the porch -I like to call it the portal of the damned.

Per instructions that I read on-line, you make a path with rocks or logs from the groundhog hole to the cage.  This provides a direct path from their home to the river.

It took two different size cages to capture the "hogs" - the large one for the adults and the small one for the babies.

My next victim   conquest is this and all other rabbits just like it hanging in the yard.  I am the "verminator!"

How does my garden grow?

I finally located the camera and thought I'd share a few photos of my vegetable garden.

The garden is located behind the row of arborvitae on the far right.  It's secluded from the pool and is not an "eyesore" in my husband's eyes.

These are the four raised beds that my husband refers to as the "over boxes" - one for each parent.  Each bed is 4' by 8' and about 18" high.  Because of our "wild" animal problems, I've had to add a fence around the top of the beds to keep the critters out.

This bed has four tomato plants, one pepper plant and, hopefully, some pickling cucumbers.

Here's a close up of one of the tomato plants.  A few years ago on a show called "Ground Force" on BBC America I saw this gardening idea - "plant" a pot next to the plant and water directly into the pot.  The water drains out of the holes in the bottom and directly into the ground and to the roots.  I've done this for a few years and it does a great job of conserving water and promotes incredible root growth.

This bed has snow peas, white onions and lettuce.

More snow peas - a family favorite including Maxie who will eat then off the vine when the vines get too heavy and fall over.  She eats the pods and spits out the vines and leaves.  Before the critter problem and her two knee surgeries, she would jump into the beds and eat the vegetables.

Four rows of beans are planted in this bed - two green and two yellow.  We eat a lot of beans.

Surprisingly, this garden will supply our family with quite a bit of fresh vegetables, with some to share.

This and That Thursday

Random thoughts on Thursday -
  • Why are groundhogs so cute and so destructive?
  • What's up with all the stink bugs?  They are all over the place and apparently can only be exterminated with chemicals that require a mask and covering your body.  Thanks to the Asian continent for sharing.
  • My son has been home from college for two weeks and his room looks no different from the day he came home.
  • Do dirty clothes multiply in the hamper?
  • Why can't the males in my house put dirty dishes in the dishwasher instead of on the counter above the dishwasher?
  • Will I get into the pool this weekend?  Haven't missed a Memorial day yet - but it will take  turning on the heater to warm up the water a bit - as long as it's 75, I'll go in.
What's new with you?

Sorry no photos

I'm not much of a picture taker.  I don't know why.  I am always jealous of all of you that post photos every day and I vow daily to take pictures to add to my post.  But I don't.  Most of the time it's because my husband has squirreled the camera away in his office.  And it's way to scary in there for me to go looking for a camera.  You see, my tetanus shot is not up to date!

So you won't see any photos of my baby groundhogs.  Sorry.  I was anxious to free them from captivity so I didn't pause to take pictures.  But I will tell you that they have the most precious faces - deep brown eyes, little brown noses and they make the cutest little clicking noise that I was able to imitate.  Call me the groundhog whisperer.  So we had a little talk as I loaded the cages in the car.  I reassured them that they weren't going to die and that I was going to take them to their parents and the first of their siblings who had been released a little earlier.  I think they understood.

Dinner tonight

My crazy neighbor Chris suggested that we have groundhog for dinner tonight.  It would be like hogveal since they are babies and have been held captive in a small space.

I think not Chris!

Groundhog Update #2

Caught the third baby and all have been safely been relocated to the river with the adults.  The rabbits are next!

Groundhog Update

Have caught two of the three babies so far this morning.  One has been released, the other, which I have transferred to the larger cage,  is awaiting the capture of the third (who has already tried to climb into the crate with its sibling) before I make the trek to the river again - earlier today, someone drove past me, stopped, turned around and pulled up behind me as I drove away - I guess he was afraid I was abandoning cats or dogs.

Coincidence or Fate

Caught a second groundhog today.  And tonight, "Groundhog Day" is on TV.

If the stars are aligned, I should play the lottery.

I hate when that happens

Titles a post then hit "return" too fast.  Then I put together a great post about revisiting my original groundhog day post.  Then I lost my internet connection before I could publish it or save it.  Hoping this isn't any indication of how my day will go.

Groundhog Day

I caught a groundhog today.  No, I don't mean the famous Phil from Punxsutawney, the movie starring Bill Murray or Gus, the second most famous groundhog in PA from the PA Lottery commercials.  I'm talking a real live, pain in the butt, plant eating, hole under the fence digging and which  recently discovered breeding under my porch groundhog.

(this is not the actual groundhog, but it sure does look like it!)

We have been plagued by a groundhog problem for the past few years.  But until now, it was pretty much confined to one.  This year, we discovered a family of five living in our section 8 housing under our porch.  There are two adults and three babies - way more than I am willing to put up with. So I set a (no kill) trap this morning and the mama took the bait. In fact, I was on the phone with my parents as she walked into the trap and it snapped shut! My next thought was "how the heck to I empty the trap?"

Google the trap manufacturer and read the directions. Looks easy enough. Call from my dad asking me to please be careful and to ask my neighbor to help me since my husband was on the road. I assure him that I will wait for Spawn to come home from the gym. Take a drive and scout out a suitable spot for release. Protect the back of the car for the cage - groundhogs pee and poop a whole lot upon capture. Spawn comes home and off we go. The release was easier than I thought. Mama groundhog was happy to scurry to freedom down by the river.

The trap is reset. The babies have managed to steal the apples out of the trap, use it as a jungle gym (I caught one climbing all over it while an other was munching on apples in it) and run through it with out the doors closing on them. So I have closed one end and hope that at least two of them will be heavy enough to trigger the doors closed. Then I will reunite them with mom.

The rest of my day was pretty normal - buzzed Spawn's hair, bought a new washer, went to Wal-Mart and the grocery store, cooked dinner.

So, did you do anything interesting today?

Jackpot

Went to AC today with the parents.  Played a lot of slots.  Won some bucks.

Last month my parents went on a bus trip to AC.  While eating at the requisite buffet, my mother heard her name announced on the PA system that she had won $1,000 and had 15 minutes to get to the promotions booth to claim her prize.  Sounds good, huh?  But my mother has has three hip replacements and back surgery and doesn't move very fast.

So, she starts making her way to claim her prize and when she gets to the casino floor from the restaurant, she realizes that there is no way she'll make it in time.  Thinking quickly on her feet, she stops at the nearest game table, explains to the dealer that she is has won a prize but because she is handicapped, she can't make the time deadline and asks if he can do anything to help her.  He graciously calls the desk, explains her situation and gives her the good news - they will hold her prize until she gets there.

Of course, because this is AC, and the casino wants to make money, she is given $1,000 credit on her casino comp card to play in the machines.  As she began to play with her card, another player gave her some good advice - when you win, cash out your winnings so you can get some money out of using the card instead of putting your winnings credits back into the machine.  She and my father used about half of her winnings that afternoon and walked away with about two hundred dollars from using the card.

With only a month to use up the credits, I was invited to join them to use up the balance.  So off we went this morning for a day of gambling - and we walked away with over $300 and didn't use any of our own money.  And my mother split the winnings with my dad and I, so now I have a little money to put away for my trip to Alaska.  Woo-hoo!  Thanks Mom and Dad!!

He's Back

Spawn has safely returned from college.   Two years down, two to go.   Well, more like five to go since he plans on going to law school.

The evidence of his return:

Laundry supplies and hangers:

The front hallway pile spills over into the living room.
Apparently he hasn't done laundry in a few weeks.

I don't think he cleaned his room in a while ("dust" written in top of TV by me).  Not only was the dust pretty thick, but it was kind of sticky underneath - ewww).

Someone has their work cut out for them, and it's not me!

Friday Funny

Spawn comes home from college today.  His room is as clean and straightened up as I can make it - clean sheets on the bed, floor (what isn't covered with stuff I refuse to pick up) is vacuumed and the exposed parts of the desk and chests of drawers are dusted.  Ten minutes after he gets home, his room will look like a FEMA disaster area.  It will drive me nuts, but it will be good to see him.

Thursday Things - This and That Thursday

Here's what's on my mind today:
  • Anyone else watching "The Unusuals?"  Hope it's picked up for a full season in the fall.
  • Dad Vail Regatta this weekend.  Spawn isn't rowing, but we'll be there to cheer on the team - Go Stags!
  • Laundry today -  before Spawn returns from school with, I'm certain, a mountain of laundry.
  • This time next week, I'll be taking my husband and son to the airport for a long weekend in the Bahamas - aren't I a good wife and mother for letting them go without me?
  • Tried the new Scott's EZ Seed - works great for fixing dead lawn patches.
  • Girlfriend weekends are a must.

Back from OC, MD

Went to Ocean City, MD this past weekend with Nurse Nancy.  It was a blast.  We arrived late Thursday night, checked in to our hotel and true to form, we were conked out early in anticipation of a busy day the next day.

Friday morning we arose to overcast weather, but undeterred, we set off to walk the boardwalk, an activity we repeated on Saturday and Sunday.  It was great for people watching and checking out real estate:

I can't believe that people would actually rent these places - well, except for college students.

The morning walks were invigorating and provided a side benefit of clearing out the sinuses and loosening up the morning cough - like a giant saline nasal spray. Ah, breathing was so much better.

Friday morning we decided to take a chance and head to Assateague to see the wild ponies. Initially we didn't see any ponies, but we did see evidence that they were there:

Eventually we did see some ponies

a kite surfer:

and some unexplainable paw prints:

We spent the afternoon in Berlin, MD the town that was used in the movie Runaway Bride as Hale,MD. I think Nurse Nancy took some photos there. Then some outlet shopping on the way back to OC, dinner on the boardwalk and back to our room, where we exciting ladies crashed by 10!

Saturday we shopped for girlfriend weekend ornament, caramel corn (for NN's mom - yeah, right) and official girlfriend weekend souvenirs:

drove around OC, ate ice cream sundaes for lunch, went to mass and ate crab cakes for dinner and again, crashed out by 10 - aren't we exciting?

Oh, during the weekend we talked and we talked, and talked and talked. Isn't that what girlfriends do?

And then it was Sunday and time to head home. Relaxed, refreshed and ready to return to our husbands, our boys (okay, mine won't be home until later in the week), laundry and the lives we love.
